How to Word an Invitation

When working with a professional invitation service such as The Polka Dot Paper Shop, you can be rest-assured that you will have a perfectly worded invitation that covers all of the information you need to get across - without being confusing or too wordy. One of the trickiest parts about wording an invitation is deciding what order the names appear in. The following are our most popular variations, with the most traditional wordings. Please keep in mind that we can fully customize the way the invitation is worded to suit your personality best, this is just a rough guide.

A couple of things to note:

  • Most invitations are worded in the third person
  • "honour of your presence" is typically reserved for a wedding in a sacred location, such as a church, synagogue or a cathedral.
  • The date is usually spelled out - unless the invitation is less formal in nature.
  • Certain family situations, religious and/or cultural customs may not apply to the following wordings. Please contact us for more personalized advice.
  • Quotes, scripture and prayers are included typically at the top or at the bottom of the invitation.
